Controls
Every action on the keyboard and mouse and on a gamepad. All of them can be rebound in Options.
Every action has a keyboard or mouse binding (with a second, alternate binding) and a gamepad binding, and a pad plays the whole game. Prompts on screen name whichever device you touched last. Everything below is the default and can be rebound under Options, Controls.
Moving
| Action | Keyboard and mouse | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Move | W A S D or the arrow keys | Left stick |
| Jump (rise when swimming) | Space | South (A, Cross) |
| Dodge in the direction held, backstep with none | Tab | East (B, Circle) |
| Cycle walk, jog and run | Left Shift | Click the left stick |
| Walk while held | Left Alt | |
| Crouch (dive when swimming) | C | Hold the right stick |
| Look over the other shoulder | V | |
| Whistle for your horse | H | |
| Free flight, rise, sink | F, Space, Left Ctrl | South, East |
Crouching makes you quieter: creatures notice you later. On a pad, a run eases back to a jog when the stick comes to rest (this can be turned off).
Fighting
| Action | Keyboard and mouse | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Strike, cast or set down what is in hand | Left button | Right trigger |
| Aim, guard and face where you look | Right button | Left trigger |
| Weapon art at hand | X or the back mouse button | Aim and right bumper |
| Next spell at hand (hold: the spell wheel) | Q | D-pad up |
| Next spell set | Z | |
| Lock on to a foe (again: the next) | R | Tap the right stick |
Holding the strike charges a heavy blow. Tapping Q with a weapon in hand steps through the weapon arts you have taken for it; holding it opens their wheel. With a focus (a wand or staff) in hand, Q works the spells instead. See Combat and Magic.
The belt and using things
| Action | Keyboard and mouse | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Belt slots 1 to 8 | 1 to 8 | |
| Next and previous on the belt | Right and left bumper | |
| Talk, pick up, gather, open, feed, mount, sleep | E | West (X, Square) |
| Choose a reply while talking | 1 to 9 |
To eat, drink, quaff a potion, read a tome or oil a blade, put it on the belt, hold it, and strike. The interact key always does exactly what the prompt under the reticle says: the thing the reticle rests on wins, else the nearest thing straight ahead.
Screens
| Screen | Keyboard | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Pack, crafting, character and chests | I | View (Back) |
| The skill wheel | P or K | D-pad right |
| Journal: commissions, standing, household, chronicle | J | D-pad left |
| Chart of your travels | M | |
| Pause, close a screen | Esc | Start |
Building
| Action | Keyboard and mouse | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Build mode on and off | B | D-pad down |
| Place, remove (or take up a station) | Left and right button | Triggers |
| Paint while held | Middle button | North (Y, Triangle) |
| Smaller and larger brush | [ ] | D-pad left and right |
| Brush shape | G | D-pad up |
| Snap to the grid | H | Right stick |
| Turn the wedge | T | West |
On a pad, build mode borrows the buttons that explore with, since there are fewer of them. See Building.
At a ship’s helm
| Action | Keyboard | Gamepad |
|---|---|---|
| Set or strike the sail | Y | North |
| Run out or ship the oars | O | East |
| Lower or raise the mast | U | D-pad up |
| Drop or weigh anchor | X | D-pad right |
| Leave the helm | E | West |
Gamepad settings
Options also set the pad’s dead zone and outer zone, look speed across and up and down, the look response curve (higher gives finer aim near the centre), inverted look, the trigger threshold, rumble strength, southpaw (look on the left stick, move on the right), and which button marks to show (as the pad is, Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo).
